Unicorns
Everyone has one. You know, the one thing that you pursue endlessly and it always escapes. Or the one thing you try to conquer, but just cannot no matter how you try. Sometimes I think my unicorn is happiness. But then I wonder if the pursuit of happiness is really the point. We all want to be happy, and that's fine, but is it really the purpose of this crazy life? Depends who you talk to I guess. I think happiness is over-rated. We are all somewhat unhappy and somewhat happy at most points in our life. It just changes which is the higher contributor to our behaviors. I guess its all about perspective again. Sigh, so much work sometimes. Being happy shouldn't be so hard. I protest!

No Jocelyn, the pursuit of happiness is not the point, I have decided. It is when you stop pursuing happiness that it finds you. Honestly.
You also have to define happiness. I think that so often we think we want this euphoria that doesn't even exist (well, except after a Banana Republic shopping spree, but then you reach rock bottom when you get your Visa bill).
Happiness is not the purpose of life. It is more about making other people happy while taking time to enjoy... whatever. It is a fine balance (as we are so fond of saying).
If I am not for myself, who will be?
If only for myself, who am I?
And if not now, when?

Don't tire yourself out! Working to be happy is a waste of resources! Relax, it will come. Now go have an umbrella drink, dammit!
Shelah you are too full of wisdom for someone so young. You inspire me. I agree with you completely. Its seems we are happiest when the people that we love in life are happy. But then, trying to make everyone happy is a enless pursuit that will never be accomplished and will destroy us in our attempt and .... good lord, take a chill pill. Sigh, I really know how to make things depressing. Can anyone say drama queen?
